Rights & Reproductions

Ordering Images and Requesting Reproduction Rights:

 

The Boston Athenæum requires that all requests for the acquisition and/or reproduction of images of objects in its collections be made in writing. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and permission to reproduce is given at the discretion of the Boston Athenæum.

    Requests must be submitted in writing. Please fill out the online form or print it out and return it by mail to:

    When a request is approved, a Permission Form will be sent to you for your signature, along with an invoice where fees are involved. Pre-payment is required. Both the signed Permission Form and payment of the invoice must be received before images are released or reproduction rights granted. Payment may be made by check or money order, in U.S. dollars, drawn on a U.S. bank; by credit card, Visa or MasterCard; or by wire transfer.

 

Fees:

    Fees are charged for the purchase or rental of prints, transparencies and digital images. Additional fees are charged to reproduce an image. These fees are based on the nature of the use. A quote will be made to you upon receipt of a completed request form.

    Charges for shipping and handling, new photography, rush orders, and the late return of transparencies apply to some orders.

 

Time:

    After the initial processing of an order, the time to complete a transaction varies with the nature of the order.
