DescriptionThe location of this scene is not known. In fact, it may be a composed landscape, that is, one constructed of elements—trees, hills, figures—that the artist had observed, sketched, or remembered from different places that he had visited. Once he came to America in about 1876, Meneghelli appears to have become best known as a painter of interiors and cityscapes; the discovery and recent acquisition by the Athenæum of this landscape has broadened our sense of his oeuvre.
