Description

Thomas Handasyd Perkins (1764–1854) was a wealthy Boston merchant; but like his brother James Perkins, whose portrait by Stuart is also on view here, he was a patron of the arts and an important early benefactor of the Boston Athenæum. Another, later portrait of him by the American painter Thomas Sully is also in the Athenæum’s collection.
