Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Frederick Batcheller was trained in that city as a stonecutter. But by the time of the Civil War, he had turned to painting, specializing in landscapes and especially still-lifes. This excellent example from the latter category is typical of the artist’s work and probably dates from the 1870s.
